Roblox Creators Can Now Develop Content for Players Aged 17 and Over
Although Roblox claims to be a platform for all ages, it has primarily been favored by children and pre-teens. However, the company has announced a shift from its family-friendly image by permitting creators to produce content exclusively for users aged 17 and above. This move is significant as 38% of Roblox’s daily active users in 2022 were over 17 years old, according to the platform’s press release on Tuesday.
Specifically, Roblox says content creators can “present more mature themes and stories in TV shows and stand-up comedy.” According to the company, this may include violence, blood, crude humor, romantic themes and alcohol. Players may also see “unplayable” gambling content, although it’s not immediately clear what that means. We’ve asked Robox to clarify.
To access this content, you must verify your age by uploading a photo of your driver’s license or ID and a selfie to confirm that you are who you say you are. Roblox says this system gives “greater confidence in people’s age and identity” and that age verification methods may be added in the future.
Eligible content creators can start making these experiences today. These experiences will begin rolling out to “eligible” users in the coming weeks. Roblox says its goal is to provide a safe and immersive experience for people over the age of 17. The company is not specific about what constitutes an “eligible” creator or user. We’ve reached out to Roblox for comment and will update this story if we hear back.
Roblox has traditionally marketed itself to a younger audience. For example, earlier this year the company partnered with Razer to release Roblox Edition gaming gear for kids. But since just over a third of the user base is over 17, it makes sense that the company wants to offer more adult content.
